Improving Course Discoverability: Redesign of the Learner Homepage

We addressed learners’ struggles in finding assigned and overdue courses by redesigning the learner homepage. By prioritizing critical courses, introducing an intuitive horizontal carousel, and simplifying course cards, we enhanced usability and engagement. The new design led to easier navigation, higher course completion rates, and reduced support requests.

Learners using the client’s app struggled to quickly find their assigned and overdue courses, leading to frustration and inefficiency. The current learner homepage failed to prioritize critical courses, such as overdue ones, and the interface didn’t offer a clear way to access all assigned courses. Feedback from users, internal teams, and customer support highlighted a consistent pain point—learners and admins alike were having trouble navigating the existing learner view dashboard.

Customers pain points:
“Dashboard in the Learner View: We would like to have a link to all courses the learner has been assigned to – similar to the ‘all’ tab in the widget ‘Assigned training’. In our humble opinion, the widget ‘Assigned training’ in the learner dashboard is not so user-friendly.”
“Admins + Learners are also having trouble finding courses.”
From customer support:
“Can we please have a version of the All Training widget that shows all assigned courses?”

To address these issues, we collected data from previous generative user interviews and gathered additional insights from internal users who also used the app. Feedback consistently pointed to the need for a more user-friendly learner homepage that organized courses in a logical order, displaying both overdue and recently assigned courses upfront.

Our design process followed these steps:

  • Industry Research: We examined industry standards to align the redesign with existing user mental models. We avoided introducing a new UI structure that would increase cognitive load, ensuring learners could intuitively navigate the new design.
  • Design Exploration: Initial mockups and design options were created, including the introduction of a horizontal carousel for course display. This design allowed users to browse through categories or collections without overwhelming them with lengthy lists. It also allowed users to explore additional content, promoting better exploration and user engagement.
  • Iteration Process: Based on continuous feedback from users and stakeholders, the product designer iterated on these designs to refine the user experience. Adjustments were made to improve navigation flow, visual hierarchy, and accessibility. After multiple iterations, the final design was crafted to best meet the users’ needs and preferences.
  • Course Prioritization: The order of courses was carefully reconsidered. Overdue and non-compliant courses were prioritized at the top, with the overdue course card highlighted in red for immediate visibility. A “Show All” option was added to make it easy to discover more courses.
  • Card Redesign: We also redesigned the course cards, focusing on exposing only the most relevant information at a glance to reduce clutter and confusion.

Learners could now easily locate overdue and recently assigned courses, with a clearer, more engaging interface. The horizontal carousel design not only made navigation more intuitive but also encouraged users to explore additional content, leading to higher course completion rates.
